OpenAI Buys Promptfoo to Lock Down Enterprise AI Agents

The acquisition brings 25% Fortune 500 penetration and security testing that enterprises demand before deploying AI agents in production

OpenAI announced on March 9 that it’s acquiring Promptfoo, a 23-person startup that helps enterprises test AI systems for security vulnerabilities. The deal terms weren’t disclosed, but the strategic rationale is clear: OpenAI is buying its way into enterprise AI security because it can’t wait to build it.

Promptfoo has something OpenAI needs immediately - relationships with over 25% of Fortune 500 companies and 130,000 developers actively using its platform each month. In the race to deploy AI agents into corporate workflows, security testing has become the gating function. Promptfoo already owns that gate.

What Promptfoo Does

The company, founded in 2024 by Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo, built an open-source platform for testing AI applications before deployment. Teams use it to identify prompt injection vulnerabilities, data leakage risks, jailbreak susceptibility, and compliance gaps.

More than 350,000 developers have used the platform since launch. The enterprise version handles automated red-teaming, security scanning, and monitoring for production AI systems.

The key insight: as AI moves from chatbots to agents that take actions in the real world, the security stakes change fundamentally. An AI that browses the web, accesses files, and executes code can cause real damage if compromised. Promptfoo’s testing catches vulnerabilities before they reach production.

The Enterprise Bottleneck

OpenAI’s Frontier platform - its enterprise AI deployment system - has been stuck on the same problem as every other AI vendor: customers want agents, but they won’t deploy them without security guarantees.

Research from Futurum Group found that 78% of CIOs identify governance, compliance, and data security as their top obstacles to scaling AI. These aren’t nice-to-have features - they’re the gatekeepers preventing deals from advancing beyond pilot phases.

The acquisition removes that bottleneck. Promptfoo’s security testing integrates directly into Frontier, giving enterprise customers the compliance infrastructure they demand. Instead of building it over twelve to eighteen months, OpenAI has it immediately.

The Pattern

This isn’t OpenAI’s first acquisition to fill platform gaps through buying rather than building. When startups have already achieved enterprise adoption, acquiring them compresses the timeline to production-grade capability.

The competition is doing the same thing. Microsoft has been integrating security and governance tools into Copilot. Anthropic built Constitutional AI constraints directly into Claude. Google is layering enterprise controls onto Gemini.

What’s different about the Promptfoo deal is the distribution it brings. One in four Fortune 500 companies already use the platform. That’s not just technology - it’s a customer base and reference architecture that would take years to replicate organically.

Open Source Commitment

The founders pledged that Promptfoo will remain open source. “The open-source suite will continue as a best-in-class red teaming, static scanning, and evals tool,” Webster and D’Angelo wrote in their announcement, adding that the platform will continue supporting multiple AI providers and models.

This matters for the broader ecosystem. If OpenAI locked down Promptfoo to only test OpenAI models, it would alienate the developer community that made the platform valuable in the first place. Keeping it open preserves the network effects while routing enterprise customers toward Frontier.

What It Means

AI agents are moving from demos to deployment. But enterprises won’t put agents into production without the same security controls they apply to any other software that accesses sensitive data and executes privileged operations.

OpenAI just bought the company that already solved that problem for a quarter of the Fortune 500. The team joins OpenAI to integrate their testing directly into the platform layer, making security a built-in feature rather than an afterthought.

For enterprises evaluating AI platforms, this is the kind of move that accelerates timelines. The security testing that was blocking deployment is now part of the platform. For OpenAI’s competitors, it’s a warning: the consolidation of enterprise AI infrastructure is accelerating, and the best security and governance tools are getting snapped up.
