Where It Falls Short
Model quality is your problem. OpenCode’s flexibility is also its weakness. The tool is only as good as the model you point it at, and cheap models produce cheap results. DeepSeek V4 Flash handles straightforward tasks fine but struggles with complex multi-file reasoning that Claude Opus handles routinely. You get what you pay for.
Edit reliability varies by model. OpenCode uses a “Hashline” editing system, but the accuracy of code edits depends entirely on the underlying model’s capabilities. Claude Code’s search-and-replace approach with Opus 4.6 still produces the most reliable complex edits in head-to-head comparisons.
Git integration is basic. Claude Code can create commits, open pull requests, and manage branches natively. Cursor integrates with VS Code’s full Git toolset. OpenCode handles file modifications but leaves version control largely to you.
Documentation is scattered. For a project with 140K stars and 850 contributors, the docs could be more comprehensive. Setup is easy, but advanced configuration — custom agents, MCP tool integration, provider-specific tuning — requires digging through GitHub issues and community guides.
Who Should Actually Use This
Budget-conscious developers who want AI coding assistance without monthly subscriptions. Pairing OpenCode with DeepSeek V4 or local models gets you 80% of the experience at 10% of the cost.
Privacy-focused teams who can’t send code to third-party APIs. Running OpenCode with Ollama and a local model keeps everything on your hardware.
