GitHub Copilot

The default AI pair-programmer, wired into GitHub.

🟢 Rating: Solid pick

Recommended. It does its core job well and the tradeoffs are manageable. The full breakdown, weak spots included, is below.

GitHub Copilot does not run an affiliate program we take part in, so there is nothing to disclose. The button below is a plain link to the vendor.

Copilot is the safe default: broad IDE support, tight GitHub integration, and Microsoft behind it. For most developers it is the assistant they already have.

Worth a warning for readers researching this: several unrelated products at copilot.com and copilot.live advertise affiliate programs. Those are not GitHub Copilot. GitHub Copilot itself has no affiliate program. We cover it because it is the baseline everyone compares against.

The good

  • Works across every major IDE and the CLI
  • Deep GitHub integration
  • Reliable, well-supported

The catch

  • No affiliate program at all
  • Enterprise data and IP questions persist
  • Less agentic than Cursor out of the box

Pricing

Free tier for some users; paid from ~$10/mo. No affiliate program.

Alternatives to consider

  • Cursor The AI-first code editor that set the pace.
  • Cline An autonomous in-editor coding agent, fully open and BYO-key.
  • Tabby A self-hosted coding assistant for air-gapped and privacy-first teams.
